This scene is from Matthew 26, and Mark 14, and its location is the city of Bethany – in the house of Lazarus where the “12” and JC are sharing a meal. When Mary pours the spikenard on Jesus Christ’s head, the disciples object. Their criticism is directed at Mary for using an expensive balm which could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor. Jesus reprimands them, explaining that there would always be poor people in the world but he won’t be around much longer and links the anointing with a preparation for his burial (as he would be crucified not many days hence). JC’s comment clearly designates Mary as a prophet as well…
