The scene of the beheading of Holofernes takes place in his tent after the general falls asleep in a drunken stupor having consumed more alcohol in one evening “than in any one day since he was born”. As Holofernes lies stretched out on his couch, Judith takes his own sword and cuts off Holofernes’s head. In order to emphasize this courageous – albeit gruesome – deed undertaken by a sheltered woman, I do not show any jewellery on her arms and fingers. It seems more appropriate for her to engage in this act with “bare hands”.
