My interest in Mary Magdalene as the present mosaic series’ protagonist developed partly because of her varied, often negative representations over the centuries both in art and in literature. I was familiar with many paintings, sculptures and frescoes depicting Mary Magdalene; I visited several churches dedicated to her and saw half a dozen movies depicting her in multiple roles associated with Christianity. Yet I knew little of this enigmatic biblical figure. In my usual in-depth research for each new mosaic series, I discovered a surprisingly large amount of diverse and complex material on this subject.

For this current series, I focused on the version of Mary Magdalene as the devoted, loyal, enlightened and fearless woman who understood Jesus’ teachings better than any of the twelve disciples, and the only disciple present at the crucifixion.
